In 2007 a friend called Thando helped me to get employment
as a sales negotiator at a real estate agency. The remuneration wasn’t
desirable because it was a commission only arrangement that meant no sale no
income.
A national economy that was nose diving, competition and
the company’s poor marketing conspired against my sales.
These moments were difficult because I was just a school
leaver without any relevant training. The only thing I knew best was writing
poems a high school passion and my master piece which was titled Wilderness Wanderer talked about a
beautiful girl in search of true love. But surely how could I write love poems
for prospects?
However, with the passage of time as I tried things to see
what could and what couldn’t work I managed to turn poem writing to property
article writing. My generous friend noticed this new development, its marketing
potential on the world wide web and he helped me set up my first blog Property
Matters News in 2012.
The Results
The year 2014 was a turning point because I earned Usd 1
000.00 through my real estate blog initiative. It all started when I wrote an
article titled, “ Financial
consequences of purchasing property from a seriously-ill seller and other
purchases to avoid ”. The post found resonance in
the heart of a Harare lady who after reading it decided to sell her land
in Madokero (Harare suburb). The lady had an outstanding
balance on a Msasa house she bought from a seriously ill seller. She decide to
urgently settle the balance after reading the post.
In 2016 I left working for a real estate agent in order to focus on the provision of digital marketing services to entrepreneurs running micro, small to medium enterprises in any industry.
Just like one of my clients running a business registration consultancy who has a Bachelors Degree in Accounting from the University of Zimbabwe but has zero know-how on digital marketing I had realized that there were many such entrepreneurs.
Trends and dynamics in the digital marketing arena were not part and are still not part of even the latest curriculum in many entrepreneurs’ education. For example few entrepreneurs I knows about the latest Google algorithm upgrade called Penguin that penalize plagiarism. Your site being penalized by Google is severe because its difficulty to reverse. Google calls this SEO spam. Spamming is a serious crime in the digital world ! For example LinkedIn ban accounts that use software aka robots to fish people’s contact details like email addresses and cell numbers.
But
prospects’ contact details are gold !
So on LinkedIn I had to find a
way around the restrictions. Just like from the beginning trying things to
see what could and what couldn’t work I eventually devised a solution. This was
a manual yet fast and safe contacts harvesting technic. I have aptly called it
social prospecting. Social – from social media and prospecting – from sales or
leads prospecting.
Social prospecting has been a
game changer. For example I could not only harvest contact details but personal
information too there by helping me create a stronger buyer persona. Just
imagine total strangers (mostly ladies) on LinkedIn could voluntarily tell me
about the bad breath they had and other personal health issues. Those days I
was doing social prospecting for oral hygiene products sold by multi level
marketing clients. But how did ladies open up on embarrassing-to-tell health
issues to a stranger ?
Its easy. At the center of my
social prospecting was a free “how to” e-book (lead magnet) I authored and this
helped to position me as a go to expert. This meant I made people to believe
that I had solutions to their health problems they were suffering from. Once
they believed trust was created so they opened up on confidential matters. Of
course they eventually opened up the wallet too !
The most amazing thing about social prospecting I devised using LinkedIn is that its duplicable on all other major social media - Facebook,
Twitter, Whatsapp etc !
